Assalamu Alaikum. In the first part of the Photoshop series, we got a basic understanding of its interface and layers. Today we will discuss the most important and demanding tasks in Photoshop  selection and background removal .

If you want to work on a freelancing marketplace (like Fiverr or Upwork), you will see that thousands of people are making a living just by removing backgrounds. Whitening the background of products is a daily task for e-commerce sites like Amazon or Daraz. In today's post, we will learn how to perfectly separate any part of an image like a professional.

Chapter 6: Why is selection the foundation of Photoshop?

Before you can do anything in Photoshop change colors, erase a section, or apply a filter you have to tell the software exactly what part of your image you want to work on. This process of telling it is called a selection. The more precise your selection is, the more realistic your edit will look. If the selection is jagged or jagged, the image will look fake or fake.

Chapter 7: Different selection tools and their correct use

There are many tools for making selections in Photoshop. Different tools are used for different types of images.

1. Rectangular and Elliptical Marquee Tool (Marquee Tool - M)

Use this tool when you have an object that is perfectly square or round. For example, when selecting a box or a clock image. Holding down Shift will create a perfect square or circle.

2. Lasso Tool Family (Lasso Tool - L)

  1. Lasso Tool: Makes selections like drawing with the mouse. It's not very precise.
  2. Polygonal Lasso Tool: This is best for selecting straight line objects, such as a building or a laptop.
  3. Magnetic Lasso Tool: It detects colors and sticks to the image border like a magnet. This is quite useful for beginners.

3. Quick Selection and Magic Wand Tool (W)

  1. Quick Selection Tool: The most popular tool today. It automatically recognizes objects when you drag them over the image like a brush.
  2. Magic Wand Tool: When the background has only one color (such as just white or a blue sky), it works like magic to select the entire area with one click.

Chapter 8: Pen Tool (P) – The first choice of professionals

If you ask a professional editor what tool they use to remove the background, the answer would be the Pen Tool . The selection made with the Pen Tool is called a 'Clipping Path'. There are some specific reasons to use it:

1. It can create very smooth curves.

2. You can control each point of the selection.

3. Big companies like e-commerce giants always claim background removal done with the pen tool.

Chapter 9: Step-by-Step Guide: How to Remove Background?

Now we will learn the practical work directly. Follow the steps given below:

Step 1: Open your image in Photoshop.

Step 2: Go to the Layers panel and see that the original image is locked as 'Background'. Double-click on it to unlock it and convert it to a normal layer.

Step 3: Select the object with your preferred selection tool (Pen Tool or Quick Selection).

Step 4: Once the selection is complete, press Ctrl + J on the keyboard. This will bring your selection to a new layer.

Step 5: Now delete or hide the original layer below. You will see that a rectangular box or transparent background has appeared behind the image.

Chapter 10: Refine Edge and Hair Selection

The biggest challenge when editing human images is selecting hair or fur. This is not possible with normal tools. For this we need to use the 'Select and Mask' option.

  1. First, make a rough selection and click the Select and Mask button at the top.
  2. Take the Refine Edge Brush Tool from the left.
  3. Lightly rub the areas of your hair where the background is stuck. Photoshop's AI will automatically remove the background from the middle of the hair.

Chapter 11: Adding Shadows (Making the Design Realistic)

When you place an object on a new background after removing the background, it may appear to be floating. To make it look realistic, you need to add a 'Drop Shadow' or 'Cast Shadow'.

1. Right-click on the layer and go to Blending Options.

2. Select the Drop Shadow below.

3. Reduce or increase the opacity and distance so that it looks like the object is placed on the ground.

Chapter 12: Pro-Tips and Shortcuts Masterlist

To speed up your work, keep the following things in mind:

  1. Spacebar : Hold down and drag the mouse to move the image left and right while working.
  2. Alt + Mouse Wheel: The fastest way to zoom in and out.
  3. Ctrl + D: Press this to delete the selection line after the selection is complete.
  4. [ and ]: Use the third bracket to make the selection brush size smaller or larger.

If you practice this part on at least 5 different images, you will gain the confidence to work in the freelancing marketplace.
