Adobe Illustrator (Part 9): The Golden Ratio and Secret Tricks of Isometric Design

In this 9th and special advanced episode of the Illustrator series , we will learn how to make your designs more precise and mathematically accurate. In this episode, we will mainly discuss the Golden Ratio, isometric design, and data visualization that will take your work to the ranks of world-class designers.

We're almost at the end of our long journey with Illustrator. Today's episode is a bit more technical, but if you can master it, you'll be able to design logos like the ones big companies (like Apple or Google) create.

Chapter 41: Golden Ratio and Logo Grid

One of the most beautiful things in the world has a mathematical ratio called 1.618 . Great logo designers create a grid of circles and lines and draw their logos on it.

  1. How to: Create a series of circles in Illustrator (sizes 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8). When you cut out a logo shape using these circles, it will look very comfortable and perfect to the eye.

Chapter 42: Isometric Design

Isometric is a type of design where 2D objects are made to appear as if they were 3D. It is currently very popular in app icons and website illustrations.

  1. SSR Method: This is a technique to Scale, Shear, and Rotate. 1. Scale the object vertically by 86.60%. 2. Shear 30 degrees. 3. Rotate 30 degrees. Voila! Your flat design will now be transformed into an isometric box.

Chapter 43: Data Visualization and Chart Tools

Did you know that you can create automatic graphs and charts in Illustrator? It's a great combination of data entry and graphic design.

    1. Graph Tool (J): From here you can select a bar chart or pie chart. Then a small data table will appear (much like Excel). If you enter numbers there, Illustrator will automatically create a beautiful graph. Later you can give the color and font of your choice.

Chapter 44: Transparency Modes and Blending Modes

Like Photoshop, Illustrator also has layer blending modes. If you want to overlay one color on top of another transparently, use Multiply or Overlay from the Transparency Panel . This helps add depth to vector art.

Chapter 45: Professional Export Checklist (Part 2)

After completing the design, check the file one last time before handing it over:

    1. Check for Hidden Objects: Object > Show All to see if there are any unnecessary items left.
    2. Simplify Path: Sometimes drawing with the Pen tool creates too many anchor points. Reduce this by going to Object > Path > Simplify to reduce the file size.

We discussed Illustrator in depth. The golden ratio or isometric design may seem difficult at first, but with repeated practice, it will become your signature style. There is no substitute for these skills to keep yourself updated in the world of technology.
